Sir. John Pease Fry, Bart, JP became Chairman of the School Committee in 1920. The new Chairman was eldest grandson of one of the School's founders - John Pease.

A member of the School Committee since 1887, he had created the  scholarship that bears his name.

He lived at Cleveland Lodge. within half a mile of School and was always accessible and ready to help in times of trouble.

Many girls boarders will have their own memories and anecdotes of Cleveland Lodge - and probably of Sir John himself.

Harry Banks 1936

“Harry Banks” (on exhibition at the Royal Academy in 1936) by Dorothy Lawrenson – who was a teacher at Ayton. The Ayton cap badge can just be seen - pity we don’t have the original in colour.

Harry Banks was at School from 1932 to 1940 and is Mary Banks' (1932-38) younger brother. Dorothy Newby (Danby 1934-39) has written with this news - also that Harry Banks was not impressed with his portrait - which is now in the possession on Mary Banks.

Harry was given sixpence and a chocolate biscuit for each sitting - a lot of money then! One could buy a lot with sixpence.
